OTHERWORLD | London's Best VR Experience, Arcade & Bar
OTHERWORLD is a mix between a massive virtual open world and theme park, and is becoming quite popular England destination for in-person VR. It is possible to bring a group of friends to use the play areas to play popular VR games, spread out across a virtual island for you to explore.
Virtual Reality Motion Simulator | YAW VR
The Yaw VR is a motion simulator that feels like something you'd pay extra to experience in an arcade, but is gear that you can purchase for the home. With dozens of supported games and more on the horizon we expect to see more of this controller in VR arcades. They currently have a Kickstarter going for the Yaw2, their next iteration on the motion simulation chair. At this time they have also hit all of their stretch goals so the popularity and reputation must be very high to earn more than 1.6 million dollars in pledges.
Paranormal Detective: Escape from the 90's by LunaBeat — Kickstarter
The makers of the successful Kickstarter campaign Paranormal Detective: Escape from the 80's (currently available on Steam) are back with a new VR escape room set in an abandoned mall arcade. While playing as a detective searching for a missing girl you get to play games, solve puzzles unravel a mystery set in a 90's amusement park. The campaign looks like it will fund in the next few days, and we're looking forward to more retro fun in VR.
Game Jam returns for 2021 | Decentraland
With Atari coming to Decentraland they are also throwing the 2021 Game Jam focused on reimagining and remixing arcade classics. This sounds very fun, and the top rated experiences will share in a prize pool of $20,000 USD and LAND. The Jam will run from February 10th, 2021 through February 24th, 2021.
UVISAN - UV-C Sanitation Cabinets - Kill 99.99% all Viruses and Bacteria
When VR arcades make their inevitable return cabinets like these will be a large part of how we can ensure that germs, viruses, and sweat are cleaned from headsets and controllers after they are used. These UV cabinets also address a concern we all have for the potential damage continued use of cleaning fluids will have on our gear.
There we so many things that made us smile this week, possibly the best being people over 150 million being vaccinated in the US and over 630 million reported vaccinations worldwide. Experiencing VR at home is phenomenal, but knowing that in the not too distant future we'll see a return of communal VR/AR/MR experiences and arcades has us ecstatic. Having visited VRZONE Shijuku, immersive experiences by teamLab, the trippy whole multi-room experiences of Meow Wolf, and projected art in NYC & DC locations for ARTECHOUSE we're very, very happy to know that we'll continue to see more innovation with everything that blurs the lines between worlds.
These experiences aren't "better" than what you can have at home, they are just great in different ways. Being in the same physical location as another person changes how we interpret and respond to any world or simulation. Advancing into a shared metaverse won't always mean we're sitting home in our shipping containers like in Ready Player One. There will always be things that only being close enough to another can make possible.
As more of these do start to appear we'll be sure to feature them in a future newsletter or on our Twitter account. You can actually find in-person experiences in our directory, so be sure to take a look if you haven't recently and consider making a reservation for later this year. If you're really enjoying this newsletter and want to help out consider sharing with someone you know that doesn't realize just yet how AR//VR/MR is already impacting their daily life.

VR Arcades have certainly suffered during the pandemic, and it’s great to see someone helping bring them back as travel and distancing restrictions become less prohibitive. Uncontained offers self-contained VR experiences for groups that can be added outside existing venues, adding VR in an easy to manage and COVID safe way.
Sandbox VR will open VR spot in Las Vegas, bouncing back from bankruptcy | VentureBeat
With global vaccinations moving forward the outlook for VR arcades is looking brighter. Going from zero locations and staff to plans for 15 locations in 2021, this is a great comeback story and hopefully the first of many in-person VR / MR venues reopening this year.
Google's Tilt Brush lets users create their own virtual spaces for others to view and explore. It's something I first tried a VR arcade and it blew my mind how much you could do with the tool. With support for just about every major head mounted unit (Vive, Oculus, PlayStation VR, Valve, etc), Tilt Brush does another thing that I find interesting in their artist in residence program to team up and support with artists on the platform.
If we said that this issue was late because we were playing one of our featured VR games, would you hold it against us? Well, hopefully when you get your hands on them you won't lose entire evenings like we did. There are actually a few experiences we're featuring, but if you want to know which one dominated the weekend ask us on Twitter and we'll share.
This week we have a broad set of experiences, a step toward the return of VR arcades, news, something to help with the worst phobia, and a case study in creating a VR experiences as our One More Thing. Lots of good content and info to start the week.
Also, be on the lookout later this week for our next Journal article on VR in the workplace. We'll explain how companies have an opportunity to get ahead of the curve as well as some of the risks in working in VR.
Thank you for reading and subscribing, and we'll see you next week!
