Experiences
MoNA Gallery
With the rise of digital NFT art the Metaverse needed a secure place to show them off. MoNA Gallery provides a blank canvas for anyone to fill with their collection or with their own creativity. If you are a frequent browser of OpenSea you may have even seen a few artists using this to help highlight parts of their NFT within a Metaverse of their own creation. What truly has us excited, aside from being able to finally build our gallery without publishing a Unity project, are some of the features they have on their future roadmap.
#bringArtToLife - Artivive
AR as an enhancement for artwork is something we wished more museums leaned into, but understand that the investment to create these experiences can be rather high. Enter Artivive, and their platform seems like a natural pairing for home collectors, artists, galleries, and museums. Adding artwork to their catalog isn’t free but does seem like an investment to drive real life visits or the sale of prints. Pretty clever.
Apps
Catch Santa AR on the App Store
We wouldn’t call this a revolutionary app like in its marketing, but it is a fun way to inject a bit of AR fun into the Christmas season. Using pre-recorded video you can overlay Santa dropping off presents in your home. We’re sure the kids will love seeing “proof” that Santa hand delivered their gift.
Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality Art Production - Acute Art
Acute Art participated in the experience we featured back in issue 39 of the newsletter, but we never gave the app itself a proper mention. Using AR you are able to take 3D artwork and see it in the real world. The App already has artist partnerships and content that make it fun to place fantastical and interesting art pieces against the real world. You can also allow location access on your mobile device to discover exhibits near you as well. The model quality is very good, and in some cases we cannot easily tell what's been placed from the app and what's really there.
Business
4 Ways Virtual Photography Boosts Your Omnichannel Marketing ROI
Even before traveling for photo shoots became impossible due to the pandemic forward-thinking brands were moving from traditional to virtual photography. We like the businesses case this article makes for its benefits. Even though this is one of those articles that validates their own product they did great presenting objective reasons that could work for nearly any brand to consider.
Tools
Virtual Photographer™️ - threekit
threekit has a very interesting service that empowers companies to replace traditional product photographs with fully customizable virtual photos. We don’t know why this is just hitting our radar but are giddy with anticipation in trying this out. Hopefully they’ll agree to an interview and demo because this looks to be one of the best looking available applications of digital twinning in the consumer space.
One More Thing
VisionBuddy | Vision Buddy - Television Watching for Visually Impaired
In most science-fiction where people wear their VR headsets full-time, how many of you imagined it was to watch the Price is Right? Jokes aside, we love the fact that AR/VR headsets can be used today to improve the life of those with visual and auditory impairments. We know we’re’ a long way from headsets being a tax write off for seniors but we’re onboard with a future where that is possible.
Commentary
Last issue we reminded you of Lens Fest 2021 happening this week, so if you haven’t already registered and you have an interest in the future of AR filters you should definitely take care of that after reading this week’s newsletter.
This week we found ourselves really deep into apps and experiences that blur the lines between the purely digital and the real world. Blame it on the AR lens influence, or feeling a bit burnt out on all of the Facebook/Meta announcements, but we needed another week of palette cleansing. And are we ever so glad we did. We found so many great teams making art more dynamic in different ways. From virtual galleries to AR layers atop real world art, there are more players in the space than we thought we'd find. Though we're featuring a few of them here this is not even close to all of the cool opportunities artists have to add another layer of reality atop their works.
Aside from joining communities around a few of them we're hoping to score a few interviews to finally fill out the planning for our long-delayed podcast launch. More on that before the end of the year, though.
Thank you for reading and subscribing, and we'll see you next week!
